Dr. Rajagopala Chidambaram-A memoir

Dr. R. Chidambaram was born on 11 November 1936 in erst while Madras present day Chennai , Tamil Nadu. After completing his early education in Meerut and Chennai he completed B.Sc. Honors in Physics from Madras university in 1956. He completed his M.Sc. Physics too from Madras University in 1958. He was accepted in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore for his doctoral program. He completed his PhD and was awarded PhD for his thesis on development of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. He was also awarded D.Sc degree from IISC later. He has been conferred several doctoral degrees in physics from at least 8 universities. He joined Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1962 and became its director in 1990.

He played an integral role in Operation Smiling Buddha (1974), nation’s first nuclear test at Pokhran. He also led Department of Atomic Energy in Operation Shakti, India’s 2nd nuclear test Pokhran II in 1998. His pioneering work in areas of high- pressure physics, crystallography and material science laid foundation for modern material science research in India.

Dr. Chidambaram steered several projects that significantly advanced India’s landscape in science and technology especially in areas such as energy, health care and strategic self- reliance. He also played a significant role in initiating India’s indigenous development of super computers. He also played a pivotal role in conceptualising the national knowledge network which integrated all research and educational institutions across the country.

He held several prestigious position such as Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India during 2001 to 2018. During 1993-2000, he served as Chairman , Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary , Government of India. He also served as Chairman, Board of Governors of International Atomic Energy Agency during 1994-95. HE was honored with Padma Shri in 1975 and Padma Vibushan in 1999.

He left for his heavenly abode today on Jan 4, 2025 at 3.20 am after brief illness. His extensive contributions in the field of Science and Technology will always be remembered and he will continue to be an inspiration to all.
