Pushpanjali in Raagam - Gambheera Nattai and Talam - Adi followed by the well-known shloka on Ganesh - Mosshika Vahanam. : Pushpanjali is a traditional invocatory dance piece where the dancer salutes the guardians of the eight directions - ashtadikpalas, and the lord of dance, Lord Nataraja. Alaripu in Mishra Chapu taalam. : In Tamil, Alari means blooming and poo means flower. Mishra Chapu Alarippu is a traditional, 7-beat Bharatanatyam piece, symbolizing a blossoming flower through rhythmic movements and awakening. This Alaripu is performed with O.S. Murugan Shabdam - Ragamalika composition set to Mishra Chapu taalam. : Shabdam is an item in which the Expressions (Abhinaya) are introduced for the first time to the students. Murugan Shabdam is a significant item in Bharatanatyam, depicting Lord Murugan, also known as Lord Karthikeya. He is described as having six faces and twelve arms, riding a peacock and wearing a half-moon on his head. This Shabdam emphasizes his valiant nature and his role as a protector, often depicted in dance forms that highlight his attributes and the divine significance he holds in Hindu culture. Main item of the recital - Dashavatara Varnam. : A Varnam is one of the most challenging and elaborate items in a Bharatnatyam Margam performance. The dancer has to constantly switch from fast rhythmic jatis to narrative and expressive elements. Today, Tejasri, Gnaanasree, Aathira, Avni & Spruha will present Varnam - Devaki Nandana.The verses for this Varnam is taken from Sri Dwadasha stotram written by Sri Madhvacharya in Sanskrit. It is set in Raagam Tillang and Talam Adi. This item describes the ten avataras / incarnations of Lord Vishnu - Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki. Thillana. This piece is set in Raagam senjrutti & taalam Adi. : This piece is one of the most joyful and dynamic parts of a Margam performance. Typically performed towards the end of a recital, however we shall have one more piece by the students after Thillana followed by managalam. Thillana is known for it’s fast-paced footwork, lively movements and intricate patterns, bringing both the dancer’s technical skill and grace to the forefront. This item is choreographed by Guru Smt. Mangalam on Lord Rama : Mangalam literally means "auspiciousness" or "good fortune," and this piece is a beautiful prayer offering thanks and invoking blessings upon the audience, the guru, the musicians, and all the world. The lyrics, "Sri Ramachandranukku Jaya Mangalam," are a glorious salutation to Lord Rama, his divine beauty, noble qualities, and virtuous supremacy. As the quintessential example of Dharma (righteousness), Lord Rama is celebrated as the personification of all that is auspicious.
